Final Super Bowl Thoughts

1)  I find it interesting that Wes Welker has now played in three Super Bowls, two with Tom Brady and one with Peyton Manning, and he's won ZERO. Welker has averaged just shy of 9 catches for 82 yards in his three appearances, but has come away with zero rings. And one really big drop against the Giants.

2) Is it safe to say that Doritos is now the year-in, year-out front-runner for Super Bowl commercials?

3) Before the Super Bowl started, I heard a stat that was something along the lines of teams with the #1 Offense were 8-7 in Super Bowls while teams with the #1 Defense were 11-3. I may not have the numbers exactly right, but Seattle's big win did nothing to suggest that Good Defense doesn't trump Good Offense in the postseason. Doesn't hurt when you score 43 points either.

4) Denver now has five Super Bowl losses which is more than any other team. And with their blowout loss to Seattle, they now own three of the five worst Super Bowl defeats in league history: 42-10 to the Redskins in Super Bowl XXII, 55-10 to the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV and 43-8 this year to Seattle. Only two other Super Bowls resulted in point differentials of 30 or more: Super Bowl XX when the Bears thrashed the Patriots 46-10, and Super Bowl XXVII when Dallas dismantled the Bills 52-17.

5) Percy Harvin had just 75 all-purpose yards during the 2013 Regular Season. He eclipsed that in just one play when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 87 yards for a touchdown. Talk about holding an ace up your sleeves.

6) Am I excited about this? Um, yes.



7) Denver wide receiver Demaryius Thomas caught a Super Bowl record 13 passes and scored Denver's only touchdown, but he did lose a huge fumble that all but sealed the Broncos' fate in this one. Thomas averaged just over nine yards a catch in the Super bowl, his second lowest output of the season (he averaged 6.8 yards on eight receptions against the Chargers in the AFC Divisional Round). In nineteen games including the playoffs, Thomas only averaged fewer than ten yards a catch four times.

8) The Denver rushing game managed just 27 yards on 14 carries against the Legion of Boom. The only time all season that Denver ran for fewer yards was in Week 15 against the Chargers when they were held to 18 yards on 11 carries in a 27-20 loss.

Aussie Open Gets a New Wawrinkle

The Swiss are no strangers to winning Grand Slam tennis events thanks to Roger Federer, but few could have predicted that Stanislas Wawrinka would walk away as your 2014 Australian Open Champion. The 28 year old Wawrinka had played in just one Grand Slam SEMI-final before this year, yet still pulled off a stunning upset defeating higher seeds Novak Djokovic, Tomáš Berdych and Rafael Nadal along the way.
