A Night for Ending some Streaks

FLORIDA STATE 66 DUKE 61

Duke got 20 points from Kyle Singler and 19 from Nolan Smith, but it wasn't enough to overcome 15 turnovers and 31.1% shooting as they fell to the Seminoles 66-61. Florida State was led by 22 points and 10 rebounds from Derwin Kitchen and 18 points from Chris Singleton as the Seminoles improved to 12-5 on the year and 2-1 in the ACC. Duke had their 25 game winning streak snapped as they lost for the first time since Maryland beat them at College Park on March 3, 2010. There are now only two teams without a loss in ACC play, Boston College (3-0) and North Carolina (1-0). The top 7 teams in the polls were all in action tonight, and the other six (Ohio State, Kansas, Syracuse, Pitt, San Diego State and Villanova) all came out winners so Duke can be expecting to drop a few spots in the polls next week.

NEW ORLEANS 92 ORLANDO 89 (OT)

Hedo Turkoglu, Brandon Bass, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick combined to shoot just 8 of 43 from the floor as they fell to the New Orleans Hornets in overtime. Dwight Howard had yet another 20-20 game going for 29 points and 20 rebounds, the 3rd time this year he's gone for 20 and 20. Marcus Thornton led the Hornets with 22 points and 9 reounds off the bench. Chris Paul chipped in 12 and added 13 assists and Emeka Okafor had 18 points and 14 rebounds. With the loss Orlando falls to 10-8 on the road and their 9 game winning streak comes to a halt. The Magic don't have to wait long to try and get back in the win column though as they travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder tomorrow.

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS MIAMI

You probably weren't going to guess that the first team from L.A. that would give Miami problems would be the Los Angeles Clippers. Entering the game with a record of 12-24 (although playing better lately), the Clips did not seem poised to knock off the red hot Heat, winners of 21 of their last 22 entering play tonight. But the Clippers came out of the gate red hot, jumping out to a 44-26 lead after one quarter. By comparison, on Sunday the Heat gave up just 44 points in the first HALF against Portland. It seems no lead is safe against Miami right now though. As they do most nights, the Heat battled their way back into the game and trimmed a deficit that was as great as 21 points down to 2 in the 4th quarter, but the Clippers had an answer for everything and held on for the 111-105 win.

Rookie of the Year candidate Blake Griffin had 24 points 14 rebounds and 6 assists, Baron Davis had 20 points 5 rebounds and 9 assists, and Eric Gordon had 26 points 5 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Clippers. Miami got 84 of its 105 points from the Big Three, but it wouldn't be enough, and like the Magic, the Heat also failed to win their 10th in a row. The loss also snapped the Heat's 13 game road winning streak.
