Sunday Six Pack

Been a while since we've done one of these, but I feel like there's lots to talk about today. So here we go!

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Manchester City made a statement today in the English Premier League blasting crosstown rival Manchester United 6-1 dealing the Red Devils their first loss of the season and taking a comfortable 5 point lead at the top of the table. City, now 8-0-1 on the year, got a pair of goals from Mario Balotelli, two more from Edin Dzeko, and individual strikes from Sergio Agüero and David Silva as they took advantage of a second half red card to United's Jonny Evans and tallied 5 goals after the intermission. It marked just the second time that City had won a match in Old Trafford since 1974, and it also shattered United's 19 game home winning streak in Premier League play as well as their 37 game home unbeaten streak in all competitions. It additionally marked their worst home loss since 1955 and the first time that United had allowed 6 or more goals in a home game since 1930. City hasn't won the Premiership since 1968. Is this their year? Their next big test comes November 19th when they host fellow unbeaten side Newcastle United.

ROUGH START TO CARSON PALMER ERA

So apparently I was wrong this morning when I said that Jamarcus Russell could have been under center for the Raiders today and they'd still beat the Chiefs. WAY wrong. Kyle Boller and Carson Palmer combined to throw six interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, and the Raiders couldn't overcome losing Darren McFadden to a foot injury in the first quarter as the Chiefs cruised to a 28-0 win. Palmer came on in the third quarter for the ineffective Boller, but fared no better completing just 8 of 21 passes for 116 yards and 3 interceptions. The Raiders now have their bye week to regroup before they host Tim Tebow and the Broncos on November 6th.

DEION SANDERS WOULD BE PROUD

Kansas City Chief cornerback Javier Arenas had a 7-yard rushing touchdown today in the Chiefs 28-0 win against the Oakland Raiders. Taking the snap out of the wildcat formation, Arenas faked a pitch and ran into the endzone untouched to give Kansas City a 21-0 lead. It was the second carry of Arenas's young career and the first time he'd scored in the NFL. As a collegiate player at Alabama, Arenas never had any carries, but did return seven punts and an interception for touchdowns.

BUDDLE SCORES AGAIN IN GERMANY

30 year old American striker Edson Buddle found the back of the net again today in FC Ingolstadt's 3-1 loss to Alemania Aachen. Buddle, a member of the 2010 World Cup team, now has 6 goals for his German 2nd Division side who at 2-8-2 are currently in last place. Buddle was recently used as a sub in the U.S.'s recent 1-0 loss to Ecuador. He has two career international goals, both coming against Australia last summer leading up to the World Cup.

TIM TEBOW A WINNER
For about 55 minutes all Tim Tebow did was prove his critics right. Up until that point he had completed just 4 of 14 passes for 40 yards and failed to lead the Broncos to a single point. Hardly an upgrade over Kyle Orton. But over those final 5 minutes and 23 seconds we saw a different Tebow, the one who refuses to lose. Tebow went 9 for 13 for 121 yards and a pair of touchdown passes in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter, ran in a two-point conversion attempt, and rallied the Broncos from 15 points down to an improbable 18-15 overtime win on the road against Miami. Anyone else want to talk about what Tebow can't do in the NFL? We'll get a better idea of whether or not this was a fluke or not next week when the Broncos host the 5-2 Lions.
