You've probably seen the highlight by now, but if you haven't, check out what Blake Griffin did to Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins last night:
One commentator last night actually stated that Griffin just got "Mozgov'd" referring to Griffin's dunk on the Knicks Russian center last year.
Which one do you think was better? If it helps your decision, Perkins is 6'10" 270 lbs and Mozgov is 7'1" 250 lbs.

Last week's question:
Eli Manning and Tom Brady will face off against one another in a Super Bowl for the second time next weekend making it just the 3rd time in NFL history that there has been a rematch between starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl. Monday Mailbag, Vol. 3
Back with another issue of the Monday Mailbag where you guys, the readers,
get to ask the questions. So without further ado:
With Clint Dempsey’s outstanding form as of late and the
emergence of Brek Shea as a possible playmaker on the wing, do you see Jurgen
Klinsmann maybe utilizing Dempsey in a striker role when World Cup Qualifying
rolls around? Assuming of course that everything remains as it is. - Cory L., Raceland, LA
As for Brek Shea, there's no questioning his talent, but his biggest contribution to the National Team so far came as a substitute when he picked up an assist against Mexico. He's still only 21 with just 11 career appearances so he's got a lot of room to grow, but for right now his versatility and high energy would seem to make him a more ideal bench player for World Cup Qualifying in my opinion. A lot can change between now and then though so it's certainly something to keep an eye on.
How important is it that Tim Ream get himself as much time as possible at Bolton to help shore up the problems the USMNT have on defense? - Cory L., Raceland, LA
To say that the USWNT are on a roll in Olympic Qualifying
would kinda be an understatement. Are they really that good? Or have the teams
we’ve been playing that bad? - Cory L., Raceland, LA
The USMNT are set to play Italy in a friendly here very soon. What would a good showing, and by good showing I mean at the least a tie, if not a win, say to the rest of the world about this team and its coach? - Cory L., Raceland, LA
Alex
Smith... I think he proved that he can play and win and not turn the ball over
and be pretty consistent (all good qualities of a QB), but when it comes down
to it, if you had one chance to make an 80-yard drive at the end of the game to
win, I wouldn't pick him if given the choice. Do you agree and if so, do you
cut your losses or do you become a clone of the Ravens with a great defense and
just enough offense to get stopped short in the conference championship? - Garrett M., Boston, MA
I can only think of one scenario where Alex Smith isn't the starting quarterback in San Francisco next season, and that's if a HEALTHY (strong emphasis on healthy) Peyton Manning was available. Otherwise, let's look at the facts:
*During the regular season, only 8 quarterbacks posted a higher QB Rating than Alex Smith's 90.7.
*36 quarterbacks threw more interceptions than he did during the regular season.
*Smith threw 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in the 49ers two postseason games.
*If not for two fumbled punt returns, the 49ers would probably be 15-3 and in the Super Bowl right now.
So I think to answer your question, you continue to do what's working for you. Smith is serviceable and he's cheap compared to what some quarterbacks are going for these days. The 49er defense is sensational, they can run the ball well, and they have a Pro Bowl caliber tight end in Vernon Davis. If they can get upgrades over Delanie Walker, Ted Ginn Jr., and Josh Morgan at wide receiver that can only help. If you consider that Smith made it farther in the postseason than Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, I don't think you have a need to change directions.
Can
you weigh in on the breaking up of the big 3 here in Boston? Ray Allen would be
an awesome 6th man and could definitely pull some trade value closer to the
trade deadline. Garnett and Pierce are tougher pieces though... do you keep one
or both? Does a young team like the pacers or trailblazers or T-wolves make
sense? - Garrett M., Boston, MA

What
events belong on "sports" networks? I suppose everyone deserves their
15 minutes, but sometimes I find myself asking what is ESPN thinking? So...what
is ESPN thinking? Here's my list:
Bowling
American Kennel Club Dog Show
Cross-Fit
A marathon
Poker
Fishing
Hunting
Body building
Monster truck rallies
World's Strongest Man (awesome, but not a sport; give it to Spike or FX; it can precede UFC fights)
Spelling Bee
Cup stacking
Billiards
Scrabble tournaments
Checkers
Chess
Sailing
Cheerleading
Dominos
Dancing
Competitive eating, specifically hot dog contests (and how do I sign up?)
Car shows
Darts
American Kennel Club Dog Show
Cross-Fit
A marathon
Poker
Fishing
Hunting
Body building
Monster truck rallies
World's Strongest Man (awesome, but not a sport; give it to Spike or FX; it can precede UFC fights)
Spelling Bee
Cup stacking
Billiards
Scrabble tournaments
Checkers
Chess
Sailing
Cheerleading
Dominos
Dancing
Competitive eating, specifically hot dog contests (and how do I sign up?)
Car shows
Darts
To
be fair, I considered the difference between a sport and activity, defining the
above as activities. This sports fan considers a real sport to be a competition
that takes both skill and athleticism, such as football, baseball, anything in
the olympics, tennis, and golf. It's only a matter of time before they start broadcasting
text message competitions, bird
watching, and fashion shows. - Ben K., Slidell, LA
That's quite a list. Ok, let's take them one at a time.
Bowling - Are there people that actually watch this instead of football on Sunday afternoons?
American Kennel Club Dog Show - I choose to not comment on this one for fear of what my wife might do to me.
Cross-Fit - Kind of like World's Strongest Man. Amazing athletes, but not primetime television.
A marathon - Watching a marathon is like watching the Tour de France. It works in the Olympics because they can keep cutting away to other sports and then every 15 minutes or so, yep the fast guy from Kenya is still winning. But to sit and watch a whole marathon? Pass.
Poker - Not a sport. I don't care what you say.
Fishing - Outdoor Channel.
Hunting - See Fishing.
Body building - Until these competitions culminate with one of these guys having to catch or throw or kick a ball of some sort, I'm not interested. Get as jacked as you want, but if you aren't coordinated, it's pretty much worthless.
Monster truck rallies - Is Grave Digger still around? Does anyone know?
World's Strongest Man (awesome, but not a sport; give it to Spike or FX; it can precede UFC fights) - See Cross-Fit. Do they have new episodes of this any more?
Spelling Bee - Maybe PBS. It is educational. Kind of.
Cup stacking - Is this related to plate spinning?
Billiards - I think if you can play it in a bar, it doesn't count as a sport. I wouldn't watch a beer pong tournament on ESPN either.
Scrabble tournaments - I saw a scrabble tournament on ESPN2 once. Those guys are all kinds of intense. Trash talking and everything.
Checkers - Really?
Chess - No.
Sailing - It's not really a spectator sport, is it?
Cheerleading - Gymnastics is a sport. Cheerleading is not a sport.
Dominos - See Checkers.
Dancing - We already have Dancing with the Stars on network television. We don't need it on ESPN.
Competitive eating, specifically hot dog contests (and how do I sign up?) - I'm ok with this being on once a year.
Car shows - I have trouble watching cars racing.
Darts - Mountain top!
The simple answer is we really need ESPN 8 - The Ocho to be a real thing. That way you have a network that handles all of the non-sport "sports". Look, I'm not saying that the stuff listed above doesn't take skill, but I don't want to watch the spelling bee or checkers or poker on ESPN. Anyhow, in summary:
Bowling - Are there people that actually watch this instead of football on Sunday afternoons?
American Kennel Club Dog Show - I choose to not comment on this one for fear of what my wife might do to me.
Cross-Fit - Kind of like World's Strongest Man. Amazing athletes, but not primetime television.

This is why darts is not a sport:
This is how chess could become acceptable on ESPN:
This is taking the Spelling Bee way too seriously:
And this is a link to the website for the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Yeah, it's real.
What's up with boxing? Is it still around, or have the WWE and UFC round-house kicked it into a figure-four-leg-lock? I vaguely remember something about Pac-Man and Meriweather, but that didn't happen because one of them wants a blood test and the other has to chase a bunch of ghosts around a maze, right? - Ben K., Slidell, LA

Is the Pro Bowl the Worst All Star Game in all of Pro Sports?
More than any of the other major team sports, football is not a finesse game. It's literally a battlefield. Lineman slug it out in the trenches, players get concussed and knocked out in vicious collisions; rarely do you ever go more than a series or two without seeing someone get helped off the field due to one ailment or another. It's a physical game. And it's really hard for the game not to lose its luster when you take that away.
Plus, look at a sampling of the players who though selected won't be participating: Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Ray Rice, Arian Foster, Frank Gore, Wes Welker, Calvin Johnson, Terrell Suggs, Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu... It's an all star game that lacks its all stars. All told, 16 players from the AFC and 8 more from the NFC will not be on the field in Hawaii for various reasons. But it's ok. You can watch Andy Dalton, the NFL's 20th rated passer, throw passes to Jermaine Gresham, who ranked 5th among AFC tight ends in receptions. Excited?
The Pro Bowl just doesn't compare to the other All Star Games right now. The NHL All Star Game selects two captains and literally picks teams, pond hockey style. The weekend also features a number of skills competitions showcasing the talents of the players. Major League Baseball has the Home Run Derby followed by an All Star Game that actually decides homefield advantage in the World Series. Major League Soccer has recently started pitting its all stars in an exhibition match against some of the world's top club teams, most recently Manchester United. And the NBA probably does the All Star Game better than anyone. The weekend kicks off with the Rookie-Sophomore game on Friday, a dunk contest and 3-point shootout on Saturday and a highlight filled all star game on that Sunday.
But with the Pro Bowl? Tackle football just isn't suited to be played as an exhibition. Especially with millions of dollars in contracts on the line. Just look at the rule changes they need to put in to play the game:
- No motion or shifting by the offense
- Offense must have a tight end in all formations
- Offense can’t have 3 receivers on a side
- Intentional grounding is legal
- Defense must run a 4-3 at all times
- No press coverage except inside the 5 yard line
- No blitz
- Not allowed to rush a Punt, PAT or FG attempt
Is there a way to fix the Pro Bowl? I don't think you can without thinking outside the box. How about an 8-team, 7 v 7 flag football tournament. Each division gets a team. 15 man rosters, let the divisions pick their own teams with the stipulation that you need 7 offensive players, 7 defensive players and 1 kicker/punter. Single elimination. At least that way it'd be entertaining. Put the AFC and NFC on different halves of the bracket, and let them go at it. I'd watch that. You still get the football, but you limit the injury risk. In essence, it's more of a finesse style game. Anyhow, it's just one idea, but I think the NFL has to do something different if they want people to actually tune in. Time to get creative, Mr. Goodell. Otherwise just scrap the game all together and send the players who make the team to an awards banquet in Hawaii.
Azarenka Wins Australian Open
1st - Heather Watson (Great Britain) - 6-1, 6-0
2nd - Casey Dellacqua (Australia) - 6-1, 6-0
3rd - Mona Barthel (Germany) - 6-2, 6-4
4th - Iveta Benesova (Czech Rep.) - 6-2, 6-2
QF - (8) Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) - 6-7, 6-0, 6-2
SF - (11) Kim Clijsters (Belgium) - 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

With Azarenka's victory, the last 8 Grand Slam singles titles have been won by 7 different women with only Kim Clijsters winning more than once. Francesca Schiavone, Serena Williams, Li Na, Petra Kvitová and Sam Stosur have also won at least one Grand Slam over the past two years.
London Calling - USA Women's Soccer Team Qualifies for the Olympics
After cruising through their first three games of the Olympic Qualifying tournament, the U.S. was probably due for a speed bump. Costa Rica, a team that the U.S. had never lost to, offered a surprising amount of resistance and if not for some stellar goalkeeping from Hope Solo and a fortunate deflection off the post, the U.S. could have themselves tied, or even behind late in the match. As it was, Tobin Heath's early goal stood up and the U.S. would add two more late goals from Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan giving them the 3-0 victory and guaranteeing them a spot in London this summer.
The U.S. will now advance to the finals on Sunday where they'll face rival Canada in a match that outside of pride will count for very little. This will be a good opportunity for the U.S. to rest some of its nicked up starters, but we'll see how Coach Pia Sundhage plays it. The U.S. faced Canada three times in 2011 winning twice and drawing once. Canada defeated Mexico 3-1 in the other semifinal. Canada's all-time leading scorer Christine Sinclair led the way with a pair of goals and has scored 9 times so far in the tournament.

Donovan Stars in Head-to-Head with Dempsey
Over the past year or so people have been beginning to question whether or not Clint Dempsey has supplanted Landon Donovan as the face of the U.S. National Team. While their was no doubt that during the World Cup it was Donovan's team, 2011 told a different story. Donovan scored just once for the U.S. while Clint Dempsey notched a team high 5 goals, including 3 during the Gold Cup. Dempsey also saw his game at the club level reach new heights when he set an American record with 12 goals in an English Premier League season. Dempsey's scoring prowess continued into this season with 15 more goals for Fulham across all competitions including a pair of hat tricks this month. While Donovan has still been productive - he scored 12 regular season goals for the Galaxy last year and added the winning goal in the MLS Cup Final - his accomplishments in Major League Soccer aren't viewed in the same light as what Dempsey's achieved in England. And suddenly there it was. Had Dempsey caught up to or even passed Donovan?
Based on what we saw today, and today alone, I think you'd have to say that the answer is no. Landon Donovan led Everton to a 2-1 win this afternoon over Clint Dempsey and Fulham in the 4th round of England's FA Cup.While Dempsey struggled to involve himself in the match, Donovan assisted on both Everton goals allowing them to overcome their early 1-0 deficit and advance in the tournament. He has now tallied 4 assists in 6 his matches with Everton since coming over on loan from the Galaxy. While the question about Dempsey vs Donovan isn't likely to go away any time soon, American soccer fans should be excited about the fact that their two biggest playmakers are playing at such a high level at the same time. With World Cup Qualifying just months away, this is exactly what the U.S. will need to earn themselves a ticket to Brazil in 2014.
What do you guys think? If you could only have one of them right now, which one would you take? Donovan? Or Dempsey?

Australian Open Finals Match-Ups
WOMEN'S
(3) Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) vs (4) Maria Sharapova (Russia)
There's more at stake than just the Australian Open title in this matchup as the winner will also take over the WTA #1 ranking. While Sharapova has been there before, Azarenka has never been ranked higher than third. This will be the Belarusian's first Grand Slam singles final, although she has played in three Slam doubles finals. Sharapova, on the other hand, is playing in her 6th Grand Slam Final, but is looking for her first win since the 2008 Australian Open. The two women have faced each other 6 times in their careers with each one winning 3.
How they got here:

MEN'S
(1) Novak Djokovic (Serbia) vs (2) Rafael Nadal (Spain)
The two top men's players in the world will face off for the 30th time in the Australian Open Final. While Nadal owns a 16-13 edge in the series, Djokovic was unbeaten in their 6 matches in 2011 including the Wimbledon and U.S. Open Finals. Nadal has won 10 Grand Slam singles titles in his career, but has only won the Australian Open once, back in 2009. An 11th title will tie Nadal with Björn Borg and Rod Laver for the 4th most all time trailing only Roger Federer (16), Pete Sampras (14) and Roy Emerson (12). Djokovic, meanwhile, will be looking to be the first male to successfully defend his Australian Open title since Roger Federer won in back to back years in 2006 and 2007. Djokovic won 3 of the 4 slams last year and is looking to start 2012 in a similar fashion.

U.S. Men Defeat Panama 1-0 for 3rd Straight Victory
*Won on the road
*Scored a goal before the 97th minute
*Successfully defended with 10 men for the better part of a half
*Posted a second consecutive shutout
- the overall level of play was disappointing. The defense was shaky, the U.S. failed to create a lot of good scoring opportunities, and the U.S. lacked the strong possession that they had against Venezuela. I mean just watch the highlights. Most of them are missed opportunities for Panama.
That said, considering the inexperienced roster that Klinsmann was working with, to come away with a pair of victories and expose a number of new players to the international scene is a huge positive. Five different Americans earned their first cap in this two game stretch: A.J. DeLaGarza, Bill Hamid, Jeff Parke, C.J. Sapong and Graham Zusi. And nobody on the roster has appeared in more than 40 international games with only 3 players (Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and Heath Pearce) appearing in more than 20. With the U.S. core group of players (Donovan, Bocanegra, Dempsey, Cherundolo, Onyewu, etc.) all getting up there in years, it's important to be looking to the future. Overall, I think you have to be happy with the direction that we're headed. Three wins in a row is three wins in a row, something we haven't done since the Gold Cup last summer. Next month's match against Italy will be a real test though and should give us a better feel for how the team is shaping up as we prepare for World Cup Qualifying this summer.

Olympic Berth on the Line for U.S. Women's Team
The U.S. Women's Soccer Team has put on quite a show during Olympic qualifying thus far. In matches against the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Mexico, the U.S. has tallied 31 goals without conceding one, but it will all be for naught if the U.S. loses on Friday to Costa Rica. Only the top two teams in the qualifying tournament will earn bids to London so losing in the semifinals would cost the U.S. a spot at the 2012 games.
While the Costa Ricans don't pose a significant threat - they've never beaten the U.S. in seven tries while being outscored 34-0 - the U.S. learned in 2011 World Cup Qualifying that they can't take anyone lightly. It was then that they found themselves in a similar must-win situation, but lost in the semifinal match to Mexico, a team that they'd previously never lost to. That loss almost caused the U.S. to miss the 2011 World Cup as they needed to win a 2-game playoff against Italy to get in. There is no such playoff for the Olympics so a loss here and they're out. With all that riding on this match, the last thing the U.S. needs is more injury problems. Already without starting defender Ali Krieger, the U.S. may now be forced to play on without goalkeeper Hope Solo. Solo aggravated a quad injury and her status for the semifinal is uncertain. If she is unable to go, backup Nicole Barnhart will get the call. Hardly short on experience, the 30 year old Barnhart has 39 career national team appearances, including a pair of shutout wins against Costa Rica in November of 2010 during World Cup Qualifying.
With the way the offense is playing though, it may not matter who is in goal. Five different U.S. players have scored at least 4 goals in the tournament - Amy Rodriguez 6, Sydney Leroux 5, Carli Lloyd 5, Heather O'Reilly 4 and Abby Wambach 4 - and they've combined for an absurd 5 hat tricks, including at least one in every game. Costa Rica will enter the match with a record of 2-1 in the tournament. Currently ranked 41st in the world they defeated Cuba and Haiti by identical 2-0 scores before getting hammered by Canada 5-1. Canada will play Mexico in the other semifinal.

Tuesday Trivia
Last week's question:
For all of Tom Brady's postseason accolades, the Divisional Round marked just the 4th time in 20 (now 21) career playoffs games that he's thrown for over 300 yards. The last two occurrences both came against the Denver Broncos. What two other teams has Brady thrown for 300 yards against during the postseason?
Answer:
That works out to an average Brady playoff performance being 22 for 36 for 239 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception.
