40 year old Janet Evans has qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in June in the 400-meter freestyle. The four-time Olympic gold medalist swam a 4:17.27 at the Austin Grand Prix today, beating everyone else in her heat by a full 5 seconds and coming in over two seconds under the 4:19.39 qualifying standard for trials. Her time on Friday morning was the 15th-best in the preliminary heats and she'll have a chance to improve upon it this evening in the "B" final set to kick off at 6 Central. Evans, who last faced elite competition in the '96 Olympics, will race in the 800-meter freestyle on Sunday.
