With Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle and Juan Agudelo getting the bulk of the attention as far as American strikers go, another name is quietly sneaking back into the mix. 29 year old Herculez Gomez, something of a surprise addition to the 2010 World Cup Team and who's disappeared from the National Team picture since then, has been red hot lately. Gomez joined Mexican club Santos Laguna this December and has been unstoppable as of late scoring in 4 straight appearances over a two week span capped off by a brace against Puebla on Saturday.
It will be interesting to see if Gomez's form will get him noticed by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Klinsmann has showed a willingness to include Mexican League players such as Michael Orozco Fiscal, Edgar Castillo, Jose Torres and DaMarcus Beasley on his rosters during his tenure, but Gomez has yet to get the call. A clinical finisher, Gomez could prove to be a valuable asset coming off the bench for the United States come World Cup Qualifying.
