MLS Week 3 Recap

Nine more games this weekend in MLS with everyone but the Galaxy taking the pitch. Here's a rundown of the weekend's action:

Seattle 2 Houston 0 - It was a forgettable night for Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron as he accounted for both of Seattle's goals and Houston lost for the first time this season. Cameron redirected David Estrada's long range shot past a helpless Tally Hall to open the scoring and then just minutes later he fouled Patrick Ianni going up for a header in the box for a penalty kick subsequently buried by Brad Evans. In the end that would be too much for Houston as Seattle's Austrian keeper Michael Gspurning only needed to make two saves for his first MLS shutout.

San Jose 3 Toronto 0 - Toronto conceded 3 goals for the second straight match as the absence of injured team captain Torsten Frings has left a gaping hole on the field for the Canadian side. Chris Wondolowski scored a pair of goals and hit the post late in the match just narrowly missing a hat trick as the Earthquakes got their second win of the 2012 season and spoiled Toronto FC's home opener. Former Toronto FC midfielder Sam Cronin had a pair of assists after tallying just two in his first two seasons in San Jose and Jon Busch made one save en route to his second shutout of 2012.

Columbus 2 Montreal 0 - The Columbus Crew got their first win of the season while the Impact are still chasing their first win in franchise history. Jeb Brovsky was sent off less than 20 minutes into the match and that all but sealed Montreal's fate in this one. A pair of off season acquisitions accounted for all the scoring for the Crew as Chilean midfielder Milovan Mirosevic hammered home a penalty kick and Costa Rican striker Olman Vargas buried a second half header. Donovan Ricketts was sensational in goal for the Impact making 7 saves, several of the spectacular variety, in a losing effort.

New England 1 Portland 0 - After back-to-back shutout losses, the Revs wasted no time getting after the Timbers needing only 28 seconds to get on the board. Former Bayern Munich reserve Saer Sène headed a Chris Tierney cross off the underside of the bar for the only goal of the match as the Revs won their home opener and dealt Portland their first loss of the season. Matt Reis made 3 saves for New England in the win.

Chicago 1 Philadelphia 0 - Dominic Oduro's second goal of the season was all the Fire would need as they sent the struggling Union to a third straight loss. Oduro headed a cross from Marco Pappa past an outstretched Zac MacMath midway through the first half for the only goal of the match. The Fire had several opportunities to extend their lead, but Oduro saw one attempt cleared away by defender Chris Albright, Pappa ripped a shot off the outside of the post, and MacMath made a terrific save to deny Oduro on a one on one. MacMath finished with 4 saves in a losing effort.

Chivas USA 1 Real Salt Lake 0 - The Goats got their first ever win at Rio Tinto Stadium thanks to a goal from rookie Casey Townsend. Nick Rimando was unable to come up with an Ante Jazic cross and Townsend, a 2011 NSCAA First Team All-American from the University of Maryland, pounced on the rebound immediately hammering it home. Dan Kennedy took care of the rest for Chivas USA preserving the win with a sensational save on an effort from point blank range by Fabián Espíndola in the 93rd minute. Kennedy has been terrific thus far this season allowing just 2 goals through the first three matches.

Vancouver's Joe Cannon was equally solid making 3 saves including a sensational diving stop of a second half header from Hamdi Salihi. New York 4 Colorado 1 - The Red Bulls put Kenny Cooper into the starting lineup for the first time in 2012 and it paid immediate dividends. The 27 year old former Manchester United reserve netted a pair of goals in a 4-1 win as the Red Bulls snapped a 2 game losing streak to start the season. Kansas City 2 Dallas 1 - Kei Kamara made up for a missed second half penalty kick as Sporting rallied for a 2-1 win and improved to a league best 3-0 to start the season. Dallas took an early lead when Brazilian Ricardo Villar struck a brilliant free kick goal from just beyond the top of the box a little over halfway through the first half. Villar curled the ball over the wall into the left corner of the net freezing keeper Jimmy Nielsen for his second goal of the season and became the first player to score on Kansas City this year. Sporting would battle back though eventually equalizing when center back Aurélien Collin headed in a free kick from Zusi deep into first half stoppage time. Kamara then had a chance to put Sporting up a few minutes into the second half, but his attempt from the spot was denied by a diving Kevin Hartman. Kamara would redeem himself though with an 88th minute strike when winger Chance Myers found him at the near post and he beat Hartman for the game winner. Graham Zusi continued his torrid start by assisting on both Kansas City goals giving him a goal and four assists through the first three matches. Hartman made 7 saves in a losing effort.
