My All-Star Ballot
American League
First Base - I'm going with Adrian Gonzalez here. He's hitting .347 with 15 homers and 62 runs batted in. Paul Konerko (.327 18 HR 55 RBI), Toronto's Adam Lind (.339 15 HR 44 RBI) and Miguel Cabrera (.325 13 HR 47 RBI) are all also having really nice seasons, but Gonzalez has been the best player for the best team in the American League and he's the AL leader in batting and runs batted in right now.
Second Base - I'm taking Robinson Cano. With Dustin Pedroia (.261 5 HR 30 RBI) and Ian Kinsler (.236 8 HR 25 RBI) both having down years, Cano's stats really jump off the page (.293 14 HR 46 RBI). He's the only AL second baseman on the ballot with double digit homeruns, and he's got 10 more RBIs than Ben Zobrist, the next best RBI guy. Howie Kendrick is having a nice season (.307 7 HR 23 RBI), but Cano's overall numbers are just better.
Shortstop - In a battle between Cleveland's current and former shortstop's, I'm casting my vote for Asdrubal Cabrera over Jhonny Peralta. Cabrera has played a huge part in Cleveland's strong start leading the team in average (.301), homeruns (12), RBIs (43) and stolen bases (11). Detroit's Peralta's numbers are good too (.305 11 HR 40 RBI), but Cabrera's breakout performance gets the nod here.
Third Base - As much as I don't like doing it, I give the nod to Alex Rodriguez here. Kevin Youkilis (.261 10 HR 47 RBI) and Adrian Beltre (.260 12 HR 51 RBI) have good power numbers but their averages are down. Rodriguez (.282 13 HR 42 RBI) has certainly put up better numbers, but there's not a lot of competition on the ballot here, especially when you've got guys like Chone Figgins (.195), Brandon Inge (.211), Mike Aviles (.213), Mark Reynolds (.207), Danny Valenica (.218) and Kevin Kouzmanoff (.221) on the ballot.
Catcher - Joe Mauer's injury really opened the door here, and there haven't been a lot of guys willing to step up. So in a bit of an upset, Detroit's Alex Avila gets my vote. Avila is the only guy on the ballot hitting over .300 and has a ballot-high 39 runs batted in. Youngsters Matt Wieters and Carlos Santana both aren't quite there yet, and the rest of the ballot is pretty underwhelming.
Designated Hitter - David Ortiz in a landslide. No other DH on the ballot has double digit homeruns and Ortiz has 17 to go along with 45 runs batted in and a .320 average. His former teammate Victor Martinez (.329 6 HR 39 RBI), Travis Hafner (.345 5 HR 23 RBI), Jason Kubel (.310 5 HR 30 RBI) and Michael Young (.308 3 HR 44 RBI) all deserve to be in the conversation, but in the end I'm going with Big Papi.
Outfield - The first one is easy. Jose Bautista (.338 21 HR 46 RBI) has had just a monster year as he proves 2010 wasn't a fluke. Curtis Granderson (.285 21 HR 53 RBI), who's tied for the league lead in home runs with Bautista and Mark Teixeira gets my second vote. The third one's a little tougher. I'm going to go with Jacoby Ellsbury over Tampa Bay's Matt Joyce for the final spot. Ellsbury's got 50 runs and a .311 average and he's added power to his game. After his disastrous 2010 season, he's bounced back strong and considering how much he adds to Boston's lineup, he gets the vote.
National League
First Base - I'm taking Prince Fielder. He's second in the league in home runs with 19 and leads the National League in runs batted in with 60 while hitting .300. With a subpar year from Albert Pujols (.271 16 HR 44 RBI) and with Ryan Howard not hitting for average (.248), Fielder's all around numbers trump the solid performances from Joey Votto (.320 9 HR 43 RBI), Gaby Sanchez (.312 12 HR 43 RBI), and Todd Helton (.314 9 HR 30 RBI).
Second Base - Fielder's teammate Rickie Weeks gets the nod. Chase Utley has missed most of the year with an injury and has just 3 homeruns and the guys with big RBI numbers, Neil Walker (.258 8 HR 45 RBI), Danny Espinosa (.233 12 HR 41 RBI) haven't hit for a high average. Weeks' strong season (.292 14 HR 32 RBI) makes him the easy pick.
Shortstop - I'd love to pick Troy Tulowitzki here, but I can't overlook the year Jose Reyes is having in New York. Reyes leads the National League in hitting (.343) and is a terror on the basepaths. Tulo has 13 homers but is hitting just .272. Cubs youngster Starlin Castro (.317 1 HR 32 RBI) also deserves mention here.
Third Base - Injuries have marred this position. Pablo Sandoval, Ryan Zimmerman, David Wright and David Freese have all been bit by the injury bug. No third baseman on the ballot has double digit homers, so I'm going to go with Placido Polanco (.299 4 HR 38 RBI).
Catcher - Unlike the American League, there's some decent candidates here. Miguel Montero (.284 8 HR 37 RBI) and Yadier Molina (.301 4 HR 28 RBI) deserve mention but in the end I'm going with Brian McCann (.296 11 HR 39 RBI). He leads all catchers on the ballot in homeruns and runs batted in.
Outfield - Matt Kemp is the obvious choice here as he's been doing it all this year (.331 20 HR 57 RBI 16 SB). Similarly I like Ryan Braun for his all around game (.311 15 HR 51 RBI 16 SB). For the final pick, I'm taking ex-Astro Lance Berkman. He's cooled off some after his hot start, but he's still hitting .309 with 17 home runs and 51 runs batted in. Apologies to Jay Bruce (.281 17 HR 48 RBI), Justin Upton (.295 12 HR 37 RBI 13 SB), Hunter Pence (.321 9 HR 51 RBI), Michael Morse (.310 13 HR 42 RBI) and Andre Ethier (.312 6 HR 34 RBI).

Gold Cup Quarterfinals
HONDURAS 1 COSTA RICA 1 - Honduras wins 4-2 on penalty kicks
Just an absolutely devastating loss for the Costa Ricans. After falling behind 1-0 minutes after halftime on Jerry Bengtson's third goal of the tournament, they fought back and equalized when Dennis Marshall knocked home a corner kick in the 55th minute. Twenty minutes later though they failed to convert a golden opportunity and in the end it cost them the match. Marcos Urena was fouled by Víctor Bernárdez in box setting up a penalty kick for Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio, but Saborio was denied by Honduras' team captain Noel Valladares. The two sides went scoreless the rest of regulation and full 30 minutes of extra time setting up penalty kicks to decide the winner. Honduras connected on all four of their penalties with Carlo Costly, Bernárdez, Wilson Palacios and Bengston all converting, but Costa Rica saw a pair of attempts hit the crossbar, one by Celso Borges and another by Saborio giving him two misses from the spot. Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell both made their kicks, but it wasn't enough as Costa Rica has never beaten Honduras in Gold Cup play. Honduras will now face tournament favorite Mexico in the semifinals.
MEXICO 2 GUATEMALA 1
The Guatemalans put up a great fight nearly pulling off the upset against what had seemed to be a previously invincible Mexican side, but El Tri overcame an early deficit and stole the 2-1 win. Carlos Ruiz, Guatemala's all-time leading scorer, added to his career tally with his 44th career goal not even 5 minutes into the match. Guatemala rode that lead into the intermission, but just minutes into the second half Aldo de Nigris scored his third goal of the tournament to even the score at 1. The 27 year old Monterrey forward now has 5 goals for Mexico, all of them scored this year. Then in the 65th minute, a familiar face put Mexico ahead for good. For the 6th time in the Gold Cup, Chicharito found the back of the net. The defending champs more or less dominated the run of play the rest of the way and now head to the semifinals for the third straight time where they will take on Honduras.
SEMIFINALS
Mexico and Honduras have met 5 times since 2007 with Honduras winning 3 of them including a 2-1 victory in the 2007 Gold Cup behind a pair of goals from Carlo Costly. The teams split four matches in World Cup Qualifying, with Mexico winning their last meeting in September of 2009 1-0 on a penalty kick from Cuauhtémoc Blanco.
Realignment in Baseball?
So there's been some talk for about the last week or so about a potential realignment in major league baseball's future. Instead of having the National League and American League continuing to be unbalanced (the NL currently has 16 teams to the AL's 14), each league would be comprised of 15 teams. Now, I'm not a huge fan of this, especially since the team that's been mentioned the most frequently with regards to this realignment is the Houston Astros. First of all, I don't like American League baseball. I mean, it's baseball, and I still like that aspect of it, but I've never been a huge fan of the designated hitter and I don't like 4 hour 9 inning games. I like the National League where pitchers hit for themselves. It adds a whole different element to the game. You see a lot of small ball (bunts, steals), pitchers can't throw at hitters without fear of repercussions, and everyone has to field a position- you can't hide players like David Ortiz (no range) or Johnny Damon (no arm). I just think it's a purer form of the game.
Now ironically, Houston might actually be better suited for AL play right now given that they're stuck with Carlos Lee's giant contract and his defensive liabilities, but that's another story entirely. Bottom line, I don't want to see Houston go to the dark side. They've been a National League team for almost 50 years, and while they're a bad team right now (25-45 entering play tonight), they've got a good history in the NL. 6 division titles in the last 25 years and a pair of wild card berths. And while they're about to get new ownership, how do you sell this as a benefit to the ballclub? The last team that switched leagues (the Brewers) were previously owned by the current commissioner so that was a little easier to sell.
Not to mention, if you do 15 team leagues, how does that work? You either have one team in each league off every day or you have interleague play every day. And then on top of that I've heard talk of them eliminating the divisions all together? That's a horrible idea! Divisions and division rivalries are what make the game great for the fans. Fans want to see Redsox-Yankees 18 times and they want it to mean something. They want to see Cubs-Cardinals and Dodgers-Giants. Don't take that away from the fans. Along those lines, I GUESS I can see the benefit to moving Houston into the AL West. You have a nice natural rivalry with the Rangers, but otherwise...
I dunno. I just don't like it. Change for the sake of change isn't something I'm crazy about. But let's say this whole unbalanced schedule is a real problem that requires a solution. How do you create a balanced 162 game schedule with 30 teams? Maybe you can't. But maybe it doesn't matter. The NFL doesn't have a balanced schedule. Neither does the NHL. Or the NBA. To make it really work, how about 2 more teams to bring the total to 32 and then 4 4-team divisions in each league? Play every team in your league 10 times. That's 150 games. Then play one division a year for interleague play. 4 3-games series gives you the remaining twelve games. Presto. The only problem is, how/where do you support two more teams? With the game growing internationally, it's not a stretch to think we couldn't find the players. What we really need is for Cubans to be allowed to play here. Maybe a franchise in San Antonio? Charleston? Portland? Vancouver? Salt Lake City? Oklahoma City? New Orleans? There are plenty of options. But is that a simpler solution than booting the Astros to the AL? Probably not. I'll keep thinking about it, and if I can come up with a better idea, you'll see it posted. In the meantime, I'll just keep hoping the Astros stay a National League team. Unless they get rid of the designated hitter...

Vancouver's three leading scorers, Daniel Sedin (1 goal 3 assists), Henrik Sedin (1 goal 0 assists) and Ryan Kesler (0 goals 1 assist) were completely non-factors in the series. That coupled with Roberto Luongo's inconsistency- he allowed 2 goals in their 3 wins, and allowed 18 in their 4 losses while being pulled twice- was ultimately enough to keep the Cup from going back to Canada for at least one more year. Boston meanwhile did everything right. All 3 of their losses were by won goal, but when they won, they won big outscoring the Canucks 21-3 in their 4 wins.
Eight different Bruins had at least two goals in the finals as they appeared to rally around the loss of winner Nathan Horton outscoring the Canucks 21-4 after he was knocked out in the first period of Game 3. David Krejci scored 12 goals to lead all players in the postseason after a regular season that saw him only score 13. Brad Marchand chipped in 11 more including a Finals-high 5. Tim Thomas, the 37 year old veteran, saved 238 of a possible 246 shots (96.7%) in the series and finished the postseason allowing fewer than 2 goals a game. In hockey, the team with the hottest goalkeeper usually comes out on top, and that was certainly the case here. Vancouver scored more goals (262) than any team during the regular season and Boston held them to 8 in 7 games. Even if Luongo had been on his game, I don't see how the Canucks overcome that.
So for the 17th straight season, the Stanley Cup goes home with an American franchise. Not since 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings has a Canadian side won the title. With their loss this year the Canucks became the 5th Canadian team to lose in finals since Montreal's win joining the 1994 Canucks, 2004 Flames, 2006 Oilers and 2007 Senators. The odds are kind of stacked against you though when four of six Canadian teams didn't even make the playoffs this year. Next year we'll see a 7th though as the Atlanta Thrashers will be headed to Winnipeg this summer.
And that wraps up another hockey season. With the NFL and NBA labor situations in bad shape, we may be doing a lot more hockey coverage come the fall...
