Jozy Altidore to AZ Alkmaar

American striker Jozy Altidore is on the move once again. This team he'll be suiting up for the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. When we last saw Altidore he had his Gold Cup prematurely ended do to a strained hamstring against Panama in the semifinals. The 21 year old scored against Canada and Guadeloupe in Group play giving him 12 international goals. After starting with the New York Red Bulls in 2006 he joined Villareal for the 2008-2009 season. He appeared in 6 games for the Yellow Submarine during the 2008-2009 season before going on loan to Xerex, then Hull City and finally Bursaspor. He appeared in 3 league games for Villareal last year and scored twice in the Copa del Rey against Poli Ejido.

AZ Alkmaar finished 5th in the Dutch Eredivisie last year with a record of 17-9-8. Their leading scorer from last season, Icelandic International Kolbeinn Sigthórsson who had 15 goals, just accepted a transfer to Ajax, the reigning Dutch Champions. American fans can be hopeful that Altidore makes the most of his opportunity in the Netherlands and comes back strong as the U.S. gets ready for World Cup Qualifying.

Shiver me Timbers!!!

Don't look now, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place. The Pirates haven't had a winning season since winning the NL East back in 1992 in the days of Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke, Jay Bell, Doug Drabek and Jim Leyland.

Now they're led by the likes of Jeff Karstens, Kevin Correia, Joel Hanrahan, Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker. It's quite a turnaround for a team that finished the 2010 season with a record of 57-105, coming in last in the NL Central for the 4th straight season. Can these guys hang in the Central against the Cardinals, Brewers and Reds down the stretch? Either way, they have a real shot of snapping their 18 year streak of losing seasons which will definitely make my buddy Cumbo happy. I don't feel too bad for him though since he has the Steelers to root for as well. Note the 30-63 Astros down there at the bottom of the division. They need to go 33-36 the rest of the way to avoid their first 100 loss season in franchise history. It's not looking good...

Copa America Update - Group C Wrapup

After a pair of draws Uruguay finally got their first win of the tournament, a 1-0 win over Mexico to clinch second place in Group C and clinch a spot in the quarterfinals. Mexico was left the only team in the tournament to lose all three of their matches. Chile meanwhile continued their strong play defeating Peru 1-0 and clinching first place in Group C. Peru will still advance to the quarterfinals though as they were the best third place team.

URUGUAY 1 MEXICO 0

Álvaro Pereira scored off a rebound from a Diego Forlan long range strike in the 14th minute and that would be all she wrote scoring-wise in this one. Mexico's Rafael Marquez, not to be confused with Rafa Marquez who played in the Gold Cup for Mexico and stars for the New York Red Bulls in MLS, actually put one in late in the match, but he was ruled to be offsides giving Uruguay the win. Uruguay has not looked like the team that drove all the way to the World Cup semifinals last summer when Forlan scored 5 goals and won the Golden Ball as the World Cup's best player. Forlan has been shut out through 3 games in the tournament and hasn't scored his goal against Germany in the consolation game last summer, a span of 10 matches. Uruguay must now take on Argentina in the quarterfinals.

CHILE 1 PERU 0

Chile got an own goal when a corner kick deflected in off the knee of Peruvian defender André Carrillo two minutes into stoppage time as Chile clinched Group C with their second win of the tournament. Peru, who entered play with 4 points still advances to the quarterfinals by virtue of being the best third place team in the three groups. Both teams were forced to play down a man for 30 minutes or so when Chile's Jean Beausejour and Peru's Giancarlo Carmona were sent off for an altercation.

Copa America Update - Group B Wrapup

They started slow, but Brazil managed to win Group B with a 4-2 win over Ecuador last night. Meanwhile it was the surprising Venezuelans who managed to take second in the group as they overcame a two goal lead in the closing minutes against Paraguay to force a draw. Paraguay managed to sneak into the final spot in the quarterfinals as they finished ahead of Costa Rica on goal differential.

BRAZIL 4 ECUADOR 2

Brazilian youngsters Pato and Neymar scored 2 goals apiece as Brazil overcame a surprisingly tough Ecuadorian squad who twice came back from 1 goal deficits in this match. 21 year old Pato opened the scoring with a 28th minute with a header and scored the eventual game winner while 19 year old Neymar scored twice in the second half for the Samba Kings. Neither player had scored in Brazil's first two games, but both players scored in Brazil's 2-0 friendly against the U.S. shortly after the World Cup. Ecuador was resilient in this match though as 22 year old Levante striker Felipe Caicedo twice tied the game, once in each half. Brazil had just too much firepower though and Ecuador was eliminated from the tournament, one of just two South American sides not to advance to the quarterfinals.

PARAGUAY 3 VENEZUELA 3

Cristian Riveros' goal in the 85th minute put Paraguay up by a score of 3-1, but a total defensive meltdown in the game's closing minutes left them settling for a draw and only barely making it into the quarterfinals. Venezuela actually got on the board first in this one as Salomon Rondon, the 21 year old Málaga striker hit a blistering shot from just beyond the top of the box and past a diving Justo Villar. After that Paraguay came storming back though. Wigan Athetlic defender Antolín Alcaraz converted a failed clearance from just beyond the six to tied the game at 1 in the 32nd minute. Then Lucas Barrios, who plays for Borussia Dortmund knocked home a rebound to make it 2-1. And then Riveros headed in a free kick to make 3-1. Game over, right? WRONG. Nicolás Fedor made it a one goal game when his shot deflected in off a sliding defender in the 89th minute and then Venezuela equalized in stoppage time. You know that play at the end of games when the team that's losing brings EVERYBODY up for that final corner kick? Including the goalie? Well, that play never works. EVER. Except this time, it did. Venezuela keeper Renny Vicente Vega won the initial header and Grenddy Perozo won the second ball with a diving header for the equalizer. The win means Venezuela takes second in the group and avoids a quarterfinals match with Brazil. Instead they will take on Chile, winners of Group C.

Fantasy Baseball All-Star Break Update

So at the All Star Break, the Flying Cave Donkies (no it's not Cave Donkeys) find themselves in second place in the LBBL (LushBucket Baseball League) behind Benny and his Bama Slammas. This is the first time we've ever done a Keeper League so the rules are a bit different which has certainly complicated things. Basically we have it set up where you could keep 3 players, but only if you drafted them and kept them on your roster all year. Now I thought I was being all smart drafting Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg in the 18th and 19th rounds because the other deal is whatever round you draft the player in initially is the round you get to keep him in. So in theory, I'd get the two guys as my last two picks for the next however long they're in the big leagues. Unfortunately, because neither one is a major leaguer, they're also eating up two roster spots which caused issues for me once my team started getting bit by the injury bug. I lost Joe Mauer for the better part of the first half, and now David Wright is on the DL. Shin-Soo Choo went down too and I had to cut him loose because I couldn't afford to start a player on the DL all week. Anyhow, overall I'm pretty happy with the way things have come together. So let's go back and grade my draft at the midway point:

1. Carlos Gonzalez - While the Colorado outfielder certainly hasn't had a bad half - .292 13 HR 51 RBI 14 SB - he isn't quite living up to the standard he set for himself last year when he hit .336 with 34 homers and 117 runs batted in. He's doing a lot of good things and his well-roundedness makes him ideal for 5x5 leagues such as this one. Unfortunately, from a value standpoint, he isn't putting up first round pick numbers for me. Grade: C.

2. David Wright - Currently on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his lower back, David Wright is having the worst season of his career. In the 39 games he played in before going on the DL, he hit just .226 with 6 home runs and 18 runs batted in. This pick has not worked out well for me at all as I'm unable to play him, but he's also on the Don't Drop List. Grade: D.

3. Ian Kinsler - Kinsler was a 30/30 guy back in 2009. He's already got more homers and steals than he did in 2010 with 13 and 19 respectively, but he's hitting just .251. Fortunately he's getting on base a lot needing just 5 walks to tie his career high and as a result, he's scored 63 runs this season. But still, he wasn't an All Star for the American League at second base which means I probably could have found somebody better at this point in the draft. Grade: C.

4. Shin-Soo Choo - Choo hit .300 with 20+ homers and 20+ steals in each of the last two seasons. This year has 5 home runs and is hitting .244. And he got a DUI AND he wound up on the DL. As a result, I had to cut my losses and I dropped Choo for David Ortiz. We'll see what Big Papi does in the second half, but it's becoming pretty clear I did not set my self up for success with my early draft picks. Grade: D-.

5. Joe Mauer - Mauer becomes the third player in my top 5 picks to miss extensive time due to injury. In 31 games Mauer has just 5 doubles and 0 home runs while hitting .243. This is the same guy who posted the following averages between 2005 and 2010: .294, .347, .293, .328, .365, .327. I think being on the cover of MLB 2011 has cursed him. Not well played Mauer. I picked up Russell Martin to be my catcher for two months when Mauer went down and he actually made the All Star Team. Grade: F.

6. Ubaldo Jimenez - Jimenez won 15 games before the All Star Break last year. This year he won 4. Granted, I did get to see him shut down the Nationals in person on Saturday before the break, but otherwise, not impressive. AND he spent over half the first half on the Can't Drop list. Ubaldo is 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA but he does have 95 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings. Grade: D.

7. Justin Verlander - Finally a pick that produced some value. Verlander is 12-4 with a 2.15 ERA and 147 strikeouts. He's 8-1 in his last 10 starts with only a 1-0 loss against the Angels. He's far and away having the best year of his career already tying his career high in complete games and setting one in shutouts. His previous best ERA was 3.37. Grade: A+.

8. Jered Weaver - Another great value pick here. Weaver leads the majors in ERA at 1.86 and started the All Star Game for the American League. He's 11-4 tying career highs in shutouts and complete games and he has 120 strike outs. He needs just 6 second half wins to set a career high there as well. Grade: A+.

9. Yovani Gallardo - Another pitcher I grabbed who has double digit wins at the break. Gallardo sits at 10-5 despite a 3.76 ERA as he's helped out a lot by the powerful Brewers offense. His career high in wins is 14 so he's on track to break that although his strikeouts are done a bit. He fanned 200+ in 185 innings the past two years but this year has just 104 in 117 1/3. Grade: B+.

10. Jonathan Papelbon - I had been hoping that last year's 3.90 ERA was a fluke but he's up to 3.93 this year and while he does have 20 saves and 51 strike outs in 36 2/3 innings, he's also letting opposing hitters hit for the highest average since his rookie season. With guys in his bullpen like Daniel Bard and Bobby Jenks, I would say Papelbon is on the hot seat in the second half. We'll see. Grade: B-.

11. B.J. Upron - It would appear I took the wrong Upton as brother Justin was an All Star for Arizona this year. But while B.J. hasn't hit for average (just .239) he does have 15 home runs and 21 steals to go along with decent run and rbi numbers. Then again, B.J. didn't hit for average in 2009 (.241) or 2010 (.237) either, so I guess that should've been expected. The increased power is a nice surprised though. Grade: B.

12. Starlin Castro - I'm very happy with how picking the 2nd year shortstop has worked out so far. Castro is hitting .307 at the break with 49 runs, 24 doubles, 8 triples and 10 steals. He isn't hitting for power, but considering what some other shortstops are doing, I'm more than happy to take his average and speed. Grade: A-.

13. Jose Valverde - The former back-to-back NL saves leader had just 25 saves in 2009 and 26 in 2010, but already has 24 this year for the Tigers. Additionally he's posted a 2.70 ERA and strikes out nearly a batter an inning. Grade: A.

14. Corey Hart - Hart was the casualty when Mauer got hurt and I needed a catcher. He was injured to start the year and didn't play his first game until 2 weeks after I dropped him. And nobody has since picked him up. Hart turned into Russell Martin for two months and then became Jhonny Peralta to offset the loss of David Wright. So while I've gotten good value for Hart's replacements, Hart himself did nothing while on my roster. Grade: F.

15. Ryan Franklin - Between the 2009 and 2010 seasons Franklin saved 65 games. This year he saved 1 in 5 tries, has allowed 44 hits in 27 2/3 innings, has an ERA of 8.46. The Cardinals released him on June 29th. I was however able to turn Franklin into former Cardinal Chris Perez, the current Indians closer. Grade: F-.

16. Aroldis Chapman - I thought the flamethrowing Cuban would be a nice sleeper at the time because I thought he could compete for the closer job in Cincinnati. He put up big strikeout numbers, but after a month and a half I got tired of waiting and picked up Ryan Madson. Madson would last a little over a month and then go on the DL so I acquired Seattle closer Brandon League. Grade: D.

17. Freddie Freeman - Freeman has been a nice little sleeper for me and has 4 of his 13 home runs this month. He was hitting just .217 back on May 6th, but since then has hit .303 to raise his average up to a respectable .274. His power numbers aren't great for a first baseman, but I was toying with this as another potential sleeper, and if turns into something special, he'd be a nice fit at number 17. Grade: B.

18. Stephen Strasburg - There's rumors he may return in September. We'll see. The bright side is that with him on the DL I was able to add an extra player so I turned Strasburg into Adam Jones who has hit .285 with 13 home runs. Grade: Incomplete.

19. Bryce Harper - He's up to AA now, and can flat out rake. Question is will he keep doing it at the higher levels. Grade: Incomplete.

20. Tim Stauffer - I kept Stauffer for 2 starts. Then I dropped him for Jeff Francis. Francis became Travis Wood who finally became Justin Masterson in late April. Masterson has been terrific posting a 7-6 record with a 2.64 ERA. Stauffer meanwhile has watched his ERA drop down to 2.97 but only has 5 wins to show for it. May have pulled the plug too early on this one, but I'm happy with Masterson. Grade: F.

21. Trevor Cahill - Cahill is 8-7 with a 3.12 ERA for the A's this year. He was 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA on May 20th so he's been slipping a bit lately. Still, pretty good value for the last pick in the draft. Grade: A-.

So there you have it. A somewhat mediocre draft when you break it down, but we're still in second place. Hopefully some of my slumping stars (talking about you, Joe Mauer) can get it together in the second half and we can bring in our second straight Fantasy Baseball Championship.

Women's World Cup Finals Set

Get ready for USA versus Japan on Sunday as Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and the American women will face off against Homare Sawa and the Japanese for the 2011 World Cup Championship. Here's a quick recap of the semifinals and a preview of Sunday's final.

USA 3 FRANCE 1

The score here is a little deceiving as this game was far from being a blowout. In fact, the score could have very easily been 3-1 the other way as France outshot the Americans 25-11. But Hope Solo's 7 saves and another huge header from Abby Wambach ensured the U.S. would be advancing to the finals. For the second straight game, the U.S. was able to get on the board early when Lauren Cheney flicked in a Heather O'Reilly cross in the 9th minute. But for the second straight game they were unable to put a team away early and France quickly took over control of the game. After coming close on a number of chances in the first half, the French finally broke through when Sonia Bompastor, who had hit the crossbar in the first half, floated a cross into the box towards Gaetane Thiney right in front of the net. Solo was frozen on the play and as Thiney dummied the cross it skipped untouched into the corner of the net tying the game at 1. That would lead head coach Pia Sundhage to make two big changes. 22 year old strike Alex Morgan replaced Amy Rodriguez and Megan Rapinoe would come on for Carli Lloyd dropping Lauren Cheney back into the middle adding some stability to the U.S. attack. It finally paid off when they forced a corner and Cheney hit who else but Abby Wambach on the back post who powered the header Bérangère Sapowicz to make it 2-1. It was Wambach's 3rd goal of the World Cup, 12th career World Cup goal and the 121st goal of her International Career. Morgan would get in on the action just minutes later when she got in behind the French defense taking a pass from Rapinoe and then chipping the ball in over a sliding Sapowicz to make it 3-1 and all but guaranteeing the U.S. their first trip to the Finals since winning the Cup in PKs in 1999. Even with the loss France has enjoyed their best International Tournament ever, never before having made it out of the Group Stage in the World Cup (this was their second appearance) and never advancing past the Quarterfinals in the European Championship in 4 tries dating back to 1997.

JAPAN 3 SWEDEN 1

I'll be honest, I took Sweden in this one, and I really thought I was looking smart when Josefine Öqvist scored 10 minutes in to give the Swedes a 1-0 lead. But the Japanese, who had already defeated the powerful Germans in the Quarterfinals, would not lie down in this one. And there would be an unlikely star for the Japanese today as Nahomi Kawasumi, who had played all of 29 minutes in the first four matches, started and then tied the game up in the 19th minute. The two teams went into the intermission tied up at 1, but Homare Sawa, who had a hat trick against Mexico during Group Play scored her 4th goal of the tournament to put Japan in the lead. Then it was Kawasumi again taking center stage who caught Hedvig Lindahl off her line and chipped her from nearly 40 yards out to clinch it for the Japanese. So Japan, who had just 3 wins in their first 5 World Cups have now won 4 games here in 2011 and will be playing in their first Championship game. Sweden meanwhile, misses a chance to play in their second World Cup Final and will instead play in the consolation game for the second time in 6 World Cups.

WORLD CUP FINAL PREVIEW

The U.S. catches a bit of break here in not having to play Sweden who has already beaten them twice this year, once in the Four Nations Tournament and once in Group Play. Instead they get Japan who they defeated twice in friendlies back in May by identical 2-0 scores. Amy Rodriguez scored in each game for the U.S. with Abby Wambach and Heather O'Reilly also getting on the board. The U.S. also defeated Japan twice back in 2008 by scores of 1-0 in Group play at the Summer Olympics, and then 4-2 in the Olympic semifinals where Japan had an early 1-0, but then watched the Americans reel off 4 straight goals. Ten of Japan's eleven starters from that game are on the current World Cup roster. To think history is any guarantee that the U.S. will win this game would be a mistake though as Japan has clearly shown they have elevated their game to the next level with a blowout win over Mexico, and wins over powerhouses Germany and Sweden. Homare Sawa will enter the finals tied with Brazilian star Marta for the scoring lead with 4 goals and the only blemish on Japan's 2011 World Cup resume is a 2-0 loss to England that only came after they'd already clinched a spot in the second round. Still, this U.S. team seems like the team of destiny and will look to end the American's World cup title drought having not won since 1999. I do not Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and company willing to let this one slip through their fingers. It's kind of ironic that the U.S. is in this position when back in April they had to win a two game series against Italy just to earn the right to play in the World Cup. Funny how things work out. Prediction: USA 2 Japan 1 and the U.S.'s first World Cup Title in over a decade.
