Let's Just Give Everyone a Trophy

So there's a story on ESPN.com right now talking about how there are voters in the AP poll that have already made up there minds on who they are going to vote for regardless of the outcome of the National Championship Game.

Erik Gee of KNML-AM in Albuquerque, N.M.: "I will vote for LSU no matter what happens in the National Championship Game. How in the world can they be the SEC West champ, the outright SEC champ, and lose to Alabama in a "neutral" site game (I guess you can debate the Superdome being a neutral site) after they have already beaten them in Tuscaloosa, have the series split 1-1 and not at least have a share of the national title?"

Joe Giglio of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.: "Unless Alabama absolutely dominates LSU and leaves no doubt that it is a superior football team, I will be voting for LSU. I am voting for the No. 1 team in the country for the 2011 season, not the result of one game. In the case of this rematch presented by the BCS, you have to consider the scope of the entire season, not the timing of one loss."


Are you kidding me? The name of the game is the National Championship Game. How can you lose the National Championship Game and still be considered the National Champion? If the National Championship has already been decided, then why are we even playing this game? I get it that the AP voters aren't obligated to vote for the winner as their number one. But how can you seriously vote for a team that loses it's final game as the number one team in the country? That goes against everything that sports are about, doesn't it? I mean, if you were a player at LSU and you lost to Alabama, would you even want to be called a National Champion? It's like, hey man, I know you got beaten by Alabama in the National Championship game, but because you guys did so good the rest of the year, we're going to give you this trophy anyways. It's this same thinking that has us giving everyone trophies because we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Look, you want to be called a National Champion? WIN THE GAME. If you can't win the National Championship Game, you don't deserve to be called the National Champion. Period.
