Women's World Cup Update - Group D Wrapup

BRAZIL 3 EQUATORIAL GUINEA 0

For 49 minutes Equatorial Guinea went toe to toe with Brazil. Then they were finally overcome by the more talented squad from South America. 23 year old defender Erika opened the scoring with a volley from just beyond the penalty spot and 26 year old striker Cristiane tacked on two more second half goals including a penalty kick in injury time to round out the scoring. Equatorial Guinea can hold their heads eye as they played well in every game and while they didn't come away with any points, they certainly didn't embarrass themselves. Well, except maybe for this play...

AUSTRALIA 2 NORWAY 1

Norway needed a win to advance to the quarterfinals, but despite taking a brief second half lead, they were unable to get it done against the Australians. Norway got a 56th minute goal from 22 year old forward Elise Thorsnes, but it would be shortlived as 20 year old Kyah Simon scored a minute later and added the game winner in the closing minutes to send Australia on to the 2nd round. For Norway it marked the first time that they've failed to get out of the Group Stage in six trips to the World Cup while for Australia it marked the first time that they've won multiple World Cup games in 5 appearances.
