Sam Gagner Ties a Gretzky Record
Any time your name is mentioned in the same sentence as Wayne Gretzky's as far as hockey accolades are concerned you're doing something right. 22 year old Sam Gagner tied Gretzky's Edmonton club record for points in a single game with 8 last night in the Oilers' 8-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Gagner tallied 4 goals and added 4 assists matching Hall of Famers Gretzky and Paul Coffey, and falling just two points
shy of tying the league mark of 10, set by Toronto's Darryl Sittler
on Feb. 7, 1976. It was the first eight-point game in the NHL since Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux did it on New Year's Eve, 1988, against the New Jersey Devils. Gagner entered play last night with just 5 goals the entire season in 43 games. The Oilers are now 3-0-1 in their last 4 games, but are currently tied for 28th in the NHL.
