The Streak is Over

Joe DiMaggio's record is still safe. After 33 straight games with a hit, Dan Uggla's hitting streak came to an end today against the Cubs. Uggla had a sacrifice fly in the first inning off of Matt Garza, but fouled out to first in the third, popped out to second in the fifth, and then against Jeff Samardzija in the 7th he grounded out to short. With the Braves down a run in the 9th, Uggla wouldn't get another shot as Martin Prado fouled out to third off of Cubs closer Carlos Marmol with the tying run on second base and Uggla in the hole.

It was an impressive run for Uggla as he hit .377 during the 33 games with 15 home runs. Compare that to prior to the streak when he was hitting just .173 with 12 home runs in 86 games. Even after his 0 for 3 performance today, he's still hitting .457 in the month of August. The upcoming week is going to get a bit tougher though as Uggla and the Braves open up a 4 game series at home against the Giants. It's a huge series for both teams as Atlanta currently holds a 4 game lead over the Giants in the NL Wild Card race. Here are the pitching match-ups:

Monday - Tim Hudson (12-7) vs Madison Bumgarner (7-11)
Tuesday - Randall Delgado (0-1) vs Jonathan Sanchez (4-7)
Wednesday - Jair Jurrjens (12-4) vs Matt Cain (9-9)
Thursday - Mike Minor (2-2) vs Tim Lincecum (11-9)

Had Uggla's streak still been alive, the odds weren't going to be in his favor going into this series. Against Bumgarner Uggla is 0/4. Against Sanchez 1/6. Against Cain 3/15. And against Lincecum 0/8.
