CONCACAF GOLD CUP Update - Group B

Jamaica 2  Guatemala 0

Jamaica guaranteed themselves a spot in the second round with a 2-0 win over Guatemala. Los Angeles Galaxy goalie Donovan Ricketts picked up his second consecutive shutout and Demar Phillips scored a pair of goals for the Reggae Boyz, the leaders in Group B. The 27 year old Phillips who plays professionally in Norway now has 3 goals in the tournament and 8 in his career for the Jamaican National team. MLSers Shavar Thomas (Kansas City), Jermaine Taylor (Houston), Ryan Johnson (San Jose) and Dane Richards (New York) all started for Jamaica while Carlos Ruiz (Philadelphia) started and Marco Pappa (Chicago) came off the bench for Guatemala. Jamaica will take on Honduras on Monday with first place in Group B on the line.

Honduras 7 Grenada 1

Grenada jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when 20 year old Clive Murray opened the scoring in the 18th minute. The lead was short lived though as Jerry Bengtson scored in the 27th minute to equalize and less than a minute later Carlo Costly would put Honduras ahead and then the route was on. Bengtson and Costly would combine Honduras' first 5 goals and Walter Martinez and Alfredo Mejia would add goals late as Honduras won in convincing fashion. Costly finished with a hat trick, becoming the second player to accomplish the feat in this year's tournament (the other being Mexico's Chicharito). Costly, who plays for Atlas in Mexico, has now scored in 3 straight Gold Cups with 8 of his 18 career international goals being scored in the tournament. Honduras can win Group B with a win over Jamaica on Monday.
