Javier Hernandez is turning in quite the performance in the Gold Cup as he picked up 2 more goals against Cuba to give him 5 through Mexico's first two games. The 23 year old Manchester United Striker has already scored 19 goals in just 25 appearances for Mexico's senior national team, 8 of them coming this year. Mexico also got a brace from 22 year old Giovani dos Santos who spent 2011 on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Spanish club Racing Santander and another goal off the bench from Aldo de Nigris, his second of the tournament. Mexico has now outscored their opponents 10-0 through the first two games and won despite a recent controversy that saw 5 of their players sent home as a result of failed drug tests. Francisco Javier Rodriguez, Sinha, Christian Bermudez, Edgar Duenas, and Guillermo Ochoa were all been found to have Clenbuterol in their systems. Rodriguez (defender) and Ochoa (goalie) both started the Gold Cup opener for Mexico. New York Red Bulls defender Rafa Marquez replaced Rodriguez in the starting lineup against Cuba while Alfredo Talavera made his second international appearance in place of Ochoa between the pipes.
Costa Rica 1 El Salvador 1
Substitute Randall Brenes scored 5 minutes into stoppage time as Costa Rica staved off the upset and forced a 1-1 draw with El Salvador. 22 year old Rodolfo Zelaya scored on a free kick from the top of the box just before halftime for his 8th international goal to give El Salvador the early lead. But, despite their efforts, Costa Rica still was able to battle back and salvage a point against Los Cuscatlecos. Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio once again started for the Costa Ricans and played the full 90 minutes for his 66th cap. Costa Rica will take on Mexico on Sunday with first place in Group A on the line.
