Copa America Update

Group C was in action tonight and through 2 matches Uruguay, the 4th place finisher in last year's World Cup, find themselves in a similar position to the Argentinians with a pair of draws through their first two matches. Now they find themselves in need of a win over Mexico to guarantee themselves a spot in the quarterfinals.

URUGUAY 1 CHILE 1

Uruguay took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal from Álvaro Pereira set up by some nifty play from Luis Suarez in the 53rd minute. It was the 25 year old Pereira's 4th goal of his career and first since scoring in Uruguay's 3-0 win over South Africa at the World Cup last summer. Suarez narrowly missed a chance to make it 2-0 a short while later and that missed opportunity would cost them as 22 year old Udinese striker Alexis Sánchez would equalize for the Chileans when he beat keeper Fernando Muslera to the back post. Both sides exchanged opportunities down the stretch, but neither could find the game winner and each side was forced to settle for 1 point.

PERU 1 MEXICO 0

Paolo Guerrero broke a scoreless draw in the 82nd minute beating Mexico's Luis Michel giving Peru a 1-0 win and setting up a showdown with Chile for first place in Group C. Peru outshot the young Mexican side 17-6 and it looked like yet another Copa America draw was on tap until the Hamburger SV striker scored his 11th goal for Peru and second of the year. Mexico meanwhile drops to 0-2 and are but guaranteed to be going home early.
