2998!

Needing just 3 hits with 4 home games against the Rays before the All Star break, Derek Jeter has a perfect opportunity to make history by getting his 3000th hit this week. He wasted little time closing the gap as he led off the bottom of the first with a double into left center field off of Jeff Niemann on the first pitch he saw. It was his third double since coming off the disabled list, but he went hitless in his final four at bats with his best bid getting robbed on a great stop by Tampa Bay third baseman Sean Rodriguez. The Yankees would lose the game 5-1, their third loss in 4 games since Jeter's return from the DL. The quest continues tomorrow with Jeremy Hellickson (8-7, 3.21 ERA) taking the hill for the Rays. Jeter has one hit in two career plate appearances against the 24 year old right hander.
