22 year Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong was named the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. Sapong, drafted with the 10th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft out of James Madison, beat out D.C. United’s Perry Kitchen, Philadelphia's
Michael Farfan, Portland's Darlington Nagbe and Houston's Will Bruin in becoming the first player from Kansas City to win the award. Sapong finished his rookie season with 5 goals and 5 assists and was the only member of Sporting to play in all 34 regular season games. Sapong also scored a goal in the conference semifinals against Colorado and had a pair of goals in U.S. Open Cup qualifying matches.
