Hockey Playoff Races and the Frozen Four

The Chicago Blackhawks fell to Detroit today 4-3 meaning Dallas is still alive with a chance to get into the Western Conference's final spot. They're taking on Minnesota in Minnesota tonight and have a 2-1 lead at the end of one. Perhaps a little ironic that the new Minnesota hockey franchise has a chance to knock the old Minnesota hockey franchise out of the postseason. The Wild have not beaten the ex-North Stars yet this season and were shut out in their previous two matches by identical 4-0 scores. Brad Richards and Brenden Morrow have the early goals for Dallas. The Rangers clinched the 8th spot in the East last night when the Tampa Bay Lightning blasted Carolina 6-2 to eliminate the Hurricanes from contention. Six different players scored for Tampa Bay.

Big hockey weekend in Minnesota this weekend as it was the site of the Frozen Four this year with the National Championship game last night. Michigan came in the favorite, but it was Brett Hull's alma mater, the University of Minnesota - Duluth Bulldogs, who pulled off the upset win in overtime by a score of 3-2 bringing home their first hockey championship. Kyle Schmidt scored the game winner to propel the Bulldogs to the win. It's been a good year for the Bulldogs who also won the Division II football championship this year.
